USAGKA TOURNAMENT RULES

 

GENERAL COMPETITOR  RULES

 

1. All competitors must wear the traditional uniform of their dojo. Solid white or Solid black. No red, blue or multi-colored uniforms. No T-shirts (except kung fu students), sleeveless or other non-traditional uniforms will be allowed. Shoes will not be allowed. Kung-Fu competitors may wear their traditional shoe.

 

2. Competition will be restricted to active students directly under the invited dojo and its respective Sensei.  No other students or Black Belts will be allowed to register, compete or judge.

 

3. Awards will be presented for first, second and third places in each division. Certificates of competition will be awarded to all other competitors.

 

4. There must be at least THREE competitors to hold a division. If less than three are entered, they will be allowed to compete in the next category UP. Any competitor wishing to compete in a LOWER division must have the permission of the tournament director.

 

5. Men and women will compete together in kata. There will be separate divisions for men and women in kumite, as long as there are at least three competitors for each division.

 

6. All competitors must demonstrate proper sportsmanship and attitudes towards all other competitors and judges. Lack of respect, poor sportsmanship or attitude will result in immediate disqualification and loss of all entry fees.

 

7. Competition divisions will be divided as follows:

            WHITE BELT - all white, yellow and orange belts

            GREEN BELT - all green, blue and purple belts 

            BROWN BELT - all red and brown belts  

            BLACK BELT - all junior, 1st and 2nd degree black belts.

 

Actual divisions may differ based on actual competitors the day of competition.

 

 

 

KATA RULES

 

1. There will be no musical kata.

 

2. Each competitor will enter the ring, and announce to the panel of judges their name, dojo and kata. They will then perform one kata of their choice.

 

3. A panel of three or five judges will score each competitor using a scale of 1 thru 10. Decimal points will be used to minimize ties. If five judges are used the high and low score will be thrown out.

 

4. Once the scores are read out loud and recorded they cannot be changed, even by the judge who gave them.

 

5. The first two competitors in each division will perform their kata. Then the judges will score the first, followed by the second. After that, each competitor will receive their score immediately after their kata.

 

6. All weapons used for weapons kata are subject to examination by the judges. Traditional weapons only such as sai, tonfa, nunchaku, sword, bo, jo, etc. No hunting knives or modern weapons.

 

7. Ties will be decided by each competitor who tied performing a different kata. No scores will be given. After completion of all katas, the judges will line up the competitors and pick the winner.

 

8. White belts will be allowed to restart their kata with half point deduction. If they make a mistake but continue and end their kata, it will be scored as performed.

 

9. Green belts will be allowed one restart with a one-point deduction.

 

10. Brown and Black belts will not be allowed a restart. Failure to complete their kata will score a zero.

 

11. In the event of a tie, white belts will be allowed to perform the same kata again. Green, Brown and Black belts MUST perform a DIFFERENT kata.

 

12. Black Belt kata will be all competitors, all ages in one division. The tournament director my override this rule the day of the event and split the division by a suitable age. Ie. 36 and above for a senior division.

 

13. Competitors who show up after the division has been bowed in WILL NOT be allowed to join the competition.

 

 

 

KUMITE RULES

 

1. MANDATORY SAFTEY EQUIPMENT FOR ALL DIVISIONS WILL BE FOAM TYPE, FULL HAND PADS, FEET PADS, HEAD GEAR, AND MOUTHGUARD.

 

2. No boxing gloves, kempo gloves or short knuckle only / instep only pads will be allowed.

 

3. Male competitors are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to wear a safety cup.

 

4. Standard 3 points / 2 minutes of continuous fighting will be in effect.

 

5. Any punch or kick will only score one point.

 

6. Contact is not required to score a point as long as proper distance and technique is demonstrated.

 

7. LIGHT contact will be allowed to the body above the belt and to the face and head, forward of the ears for all divisions. 

 

8. Target areas not allowed will be to the spine, all joints, any target below the belt, and rear of skull.

 

9. There will be no foot checks, sweeps of any kind or takedowns allowed.

 

10. Grabbing the gi is allowed but does not score a point.

 

11. Persons watching a fight must remain at least 10 feet back from the ring. The will be no COACHING from outside the ring. Excessive yelling to the competitor will not be allowed and may result in his disqualification.

 

12. Rings will be judged by three or five judges.  The center ring judge may :

         Disqualify any competitor if safety is an issue without other judges consent

         Disqualify any competitor for poor sportsmanship or control without other judge’s consent.

         Call a judges conference to determine if warning or disqualification is required.

 

Points will not be awarded to the other competitor in the event of a warning. Warnings will result in disqualification.

 

 13. Competitors who demonstrate poor conduct, lack of respect to any judge or poor sportsmanship will be immediately disqualified!!

 

14. Competitors who do not stop fighting when the action stops will be immediately disqualified.

 

15. The time will run continuously through the fight and only be stopped whenever the center ring judge asks for it to be stopped.          

 

16. In the event of a tie at the end of time, the fight will continue until the majority of the judges’ award a point. There will be no time limit.    

 

17. Competitors who show up after the division has been bowed in WILL NOT be allowed to join the competition.

 

18. Any and all decisions made by the head ring judge or Tournament director are FINAL.
